Eau de Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum... What's the difference?

a person hesitating choosing a perfume

When you walk into a perfume store, you're guided by the bottles, the brands and the scents. But the question soon arises: what's the difference between cologne, eau de toilette, eau de parfum, perfume or perfume extract? The names vary, and often the prices are the same... Many consumers confess they don't really know what the difference is. They may imagine that it's simply a question of style, when in fact it's a question of different concentrations of fragrance essences. It will not have the same intensity, the same hold or the same way of unfolding on the skin. This explains why your favorite fragrance exists in both a light eau de toilette and a deeper eau de parfum.

The aim of this article is to put some order into this vocabulary and help you choose the formula that best suits your desires.

Cologne, freshness that flies fast

Cologne is the lightest of them all. It contains around 2-5% fragrance concentrate, diluted in lots of alcohol.

The result is a sparkling sensation, often citrus-based, ideal for a generous, refreshing gesture. But it evaporates quickly, lasting only one to two hours.

Eau de Toilette, the discreet all-rounder

With 5 to 10% fragrance essences, eau de toilette is a compromise between freshness and staying power. It lasts an average of 3 to 5 hours, with a trail that's present but not overpowering. This is the most widespread form, perfect for everyday use.

Eau de Parfum, the assertive presence

Richer, eau de parfum contains between 10 and 18% fragrance base. It reveals greater depth and stays on the skin for 6 to 8 hours. Its sillage is more intense, making it the preferred choice of those who want their fragrance to leave a real mark.

Perfume, the traditional concentration

Between 18% and 25% essences, perfume is dense and powerful. A few drops are enough to last all day, or even longer. It is worn in small touches, like a precious gesture.

Extrait de Parfum or Elixir, the quintessence

Above 25% concentrate, extract is the noblest and rarest version. Very intense, it is applied in minute touches to pulse points (neck, wrists). This is the most luxurious, intimate and enveloping form.
